What is Ocular Inflammation?

Ocular inflammation, also known as Uveitis, occurs when the middle layer of the eye (Uvea) gets red and swollen. Uveitis can be serious, causing damage to vital eye tissue and leading to permanent vision loss.

Causes

  • Infections that can include:
  • Shingles Virus
  • Herpes Simplex Virus
  • Lyme Disease
  • Toxoplasmosis
  • Systemic Inflammatory Disease:
  • Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD)
  • Rheumatoid Arthritis
  • Lupus
  • Eye Injury
  • Smoking increases your risk of inflammation

Symptoms

  • Red Eyes (with/without pain)
  • Sensitivity to light
  • Blurry vision
  • Swelling
  • Warmth
  • Irregular Pupil
  • Seeing floaters or moving clouds
  • Headaches
